Landscape Architecture, Program Coordinator

Faculty Tenure or Tenure-Track 9-Month (Associate or Full Professor)

Landscape Architecture, Program Coordinator

College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED)

[Job #997985]

Kent Campus – Kent, OH

Opportunity: The College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) invites applications for the position of Program Coordinator of a recently created landscape architecture degree program based in Cleveland, Ohio.

This faculty position will have the opportunity to guide and direct an exciting new program in Landscape Architecture focused on design and the continuing revitalization and developed vibrancy of urban and suburban infrastructures.  The individual will provide vision, leadership and teach in a first professional Master’s degree and a post–professional Master’s degree in landscape architecture.  The candidate will work with faculty, students and professionals to shape and implement the mission and character of the new program, and will possess the abilities to recruit students and develop supportive relationships within the academic and professional communities. In addition, the Program Coordinator is expected to produce creative or scholarly work, and engage in service activities.

The MLA programs are entering their third year (the program began Fall 2014) and are in the process of seeking LAAB candidacy status. We seek an accomplished designer with expertise in either the history/theory of  landscape  architecture,  or  the  integration  of  construction  technologies  and  site engineering to teach graduate design studios and coursework related to their area of expertise. We seek applicants with strong representational skills (both analog and digital). Cleveland and the Great Lakes regional context offer unique opportunities and challenges requiring a landscape perspective. The MLA programs focus on urban, postindustrial, and infrastructural landscapes that merge cultural considerations with ecological systems and hydrological infrastructure.

Candidates must hold, at minimum, a Master of Landscape Architecture or its equivalent. They should have substantive experience in design practice and have professional registration, innovative research, and/or university teaching. They should also have a growing network of professional collaborators and show promise for developing a national reputation through the dissemination of peer-reviewed scholarship in leading venues. The successful candidate will be expected to lead in the delivery of studio-based and lecture formats within the Landscape Architecture program, especially related to their own area of expertise.

The program is part of three degree programs, including architecture and urban design at the CUDC in Playhouse Square, Cleveland, Ohio  http://www.cudc.kent.edu/.  The CAED’s 24 full-time faculty and 750 undergraduate and graduate students occupy three locations: the spectacular new 107,000 sq. ft. Center for Architecture and Environmental Design designed by Weiss/Manfredi on the edge of downtown Kent; the recently renovated Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative in Playhouse Square; and the Palazzo Vettori in the historic center of Florence, Italy.

The CAED’s distinguished faculty, cutting-edge facilities, and established programs in Architecture, Architectural Studies, Interior Design, Urban Design, Landscape Architecture, Health Care Design, research-based graduate work in Architecture and Environmental Design and Construction Management offer numerous cross-disciplinary research opportunities and maintain close relationships with regional industry and design practice.  The MLA program is strategically situated in Cleveland together with the college’s Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC) where the Master of Urban Design and Master of Architecture students and faculty collaborate with the MLA and CUDC on projects and research dealing with urban ecologies, integrating landscape and infrastructural concerns with the goal of making better cities. Research areas dealing with brownfield sites and cross disciplinary research with geography and biology also abound.

The CAED houses two faculty-led research labs: the Robotics Fabrication Lab (RFAB) and the Novel Ecology Design Lab (NEDlab). Expanding digital design resources in Kent include a new state of the art Fabrication Lab with wood and metal shops, CNC routers, plasma cutter and robotic arms; a computer lab with open-access 3D printers and laser cutters; quadcopter drone and infrared cameras for aerial and thermal imaging; and campus partnerships with other digitally-oriented units including the highly regarded Schools of Art, Fashion Design, Visual Communication Design and the Liquid Crystal Institute.

Located midway between New York and Chicago in the Cleveland/Akron metro area, Kent State University is an ascending national research university in the heart of a burgeoning cultural and industrial region that is home to some of the world’s finest art museums, national and metro park systems, robust regional industrial activity, universities, restaurants, theaters, music venues, and independent cinemas.
